The Hong Kong Singers are delighted to announce their third show of the year, the Cole Porter classic Kiss Me, Kate. This will be a fully staged production that will feature a cast of around 50 singers, actors and dancers, plus a live orchestra. Kiss Me, Kate will be staged in late November at The City Hall Theatre, the same venue as April's major success, Guys and Dolls. Kiss Me, Kate has been described as the high ground of Cole Porter's long and fruitful career as a composer for the musical theatre. It is the only one of his musicals to exceed a thousand performances on Broadway when it opened there in late 1948. Among the show's best-known songs are Another Opening, Another Show, Wunderbar, So In Love, Too Darn Hot and Always True To You (In My Fashion).
Synopsis:
The egotistical performer Fred Graham is reunited with his temperamental ex-wife Lilli Vanessi when they are cast in the leading roles of Petruchio and Kate in a musical adaptation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Throughout the show they fight but they are obviously still in love with each other. Meanwhile, owing to a case of mistaken identity, two gangsters harass Fred. And two former cabaret performers, also cast in the production, Lois Lane and Bill Calhoun, struggle to keep their romance alive. As this play-within-a-play unfolds, the on-stage performance of the four main characters is complicated by what is happening in their off-stage lives. Needless to say, they all live happily ever after.
